The 9th International Conferene of Environmental Science and Technology organised by American Academy of Sciences was held during 25th - 29th June 2018 at Hilton Houston North, Houston, Texas. It was a hugh conference conducted throughout the 5 days with more than 500 participants who were professors, scientists, PhD students and some undergraduate students representing various countries who were doingextensive research on environmenal science and technology. So, it was a great opportunity for me to get updated on the recent reseaches conducted in different countries and to get the expert opinion on current issues. It was my supervisor Professor Ng Wun Jern who introduced and guided me to submit an abstract and a paper to the conference.I decide ti take part in oral presentation category under Adsoption/Desorption for Wastewater Treatment. I got to share my interests with scientists from the USA, Germany, Japan, India, Philippine etc and I especially enjoyed two keynote speeches conducted by two professors from Germany and USA which were valuable for the further development of my research. My paper was selected as the Best Student Paper (Third Place) out of hundreds of submissions which was an unforgettable experience for me. I felt proud of myself and it provided me with the motivation to work harder and to do my best in my future steps. I got the chance to visit some parts of USA and especially NASA during the conference time which was a dream come true for me. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage my peers to challenge themselves by taking part in such competitions, conferences as these experiences are valuable in finetuning your research path towards the achievement of a glorious PhD.

The European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) was founded in 1983 and has more than 4000 members from industries, government, academia and  research laboratories. As E-MRS encourages scientists, engineers and research managers to exchange information on the interdisciplinary platform, this motivated me to attend the conference as I look forward to communicating with the various experts. Prior to the conference, I had to read up on the IGS conference policy and to prepare application documents to take part in the Graduate Student Award (GSA). It is important to focus on the GSA application as I need to summarize my work by using simple and common words for the panel to clearly understand. I was notified that I was shortlisted as a GSA finalist while aboard and had to prepare a 5 minutes presentation. Despite having insufficient time to prepare, I manage to come up with a presentation that was clear and concise. Winning the award made me feel proud that my work has value and this definitely encouraged me to push myself harder at research. One of the memorable experience at the conference was being approached by a Chairman from one of the symposiums. We discussed a lot and it helped me to widen my knowledge in the material research area. I also managed to meet senior professors and researchers from Korea. They were willing to share their experience and perspective which benefitted me. For fellow students, remember to prepare and summarize your abstract carefully, with the aim to allow your panal and audience to understand your work. You can also check with IGS admin staff to clarify any questions on conference policy and they will help you.
